Who's Buying Trump's Social Network, and Why?

Here's a typical piece of business news: "Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the operator of Truth Social, announced Thursday it has reached a definitive agreement to merge with TAE Technologies in an all-stock deal valued at roughly $6 billion".[1] But it's only normal at first glance. Digging a little deeper reveals some very strange coincidences and contradictions.

Let's start with the basics. Donald Trump, the current US President, created Truth Social in 2022, after he was banned from Facebook and Twitter. The new social network has over 6 million users, primarily in the US and Canada. That's not much compared to Facebook's 3 billion. But if someone wants to merge with Truth Social for $6 billion, why not?

But then things get weird. TAE Technologies is a company that's very far from social media. For most of its short history, from 1998 to 2015, the company was not publicly traded. It didn't even have a website. TAE Technologies is developing commercial thermonuclear fusion. The idea is simple: nuclear energy will be cheaper and safer. In 2012, the Russian government invested in TAE Technologies through the state corporation Rusnano. Perhaps the investment was significant, as Rusnano CEO Anatoly Chubais became a member of TAE Technologies' Board of Directors.

Currently, one of TAE Technologies' key executives is Senior Vice President Sergei Putvinsky. He defended both his dissertations at the Kurchatov Institute (many readers of this text remember the "atomic shield of the motherland"), from which he began his career in various international projects.

Another strange coincidence: Mikhail Kovalchuk has been the President of the Kurchatov Institute since 2015. Kovalchuk was appointed to this position by personal order of Putin. Mikhail Kovalchuk is a highly respected figure in the Russian scientific community. He is a full Cavalier of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland." When Russian academics failed to elect Kovalchuk a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2008, the Academy's president publicly apologized. But most importantly, Mikhail Kovalchuk is the brother of Yuri Kovalchuk, a friend of Putin. Yuri is a member of the so-called "Collegium," a group of people who govern Russia. It's similar to the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, only informal.

Further coincidences explain the connection between nuclear fusion and social media. Mikhail Kovalchuk's son, Kirill, is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of National Media Group, a huge holding company with stakes in almost all Russian media outlets, including the Izvestia newspaper, Channel One, Channel Five, REN TV, and STS Media. And that's just the beginning. Mikhail Kovalchuk's grandson, Stepan, worked in the presidential administration of the Russian Federation and, since 2023, has been the head of the social network VKontakte. Thus, a chain of official and family relationships is planned to link the Russian international propaganda machine and the American social network Truth Social.

The fusion of business, power, and family is typical of the Russian regime. The story of the impending purchase of Truth Social convincingly confirms this. And this story requires a thorough and detailed investigation.
